I believe Frederic Quitkin concluded that placebo-responders to antidepressants report improvements that are abrupt and occurring earlier in treatment when compared to active drug. They also tended to relapse sooner, usually within 12 weeks. He suggested that placebo-responders who improved later and more gradually were actually experiencing a spontaneous remission. Interestingly, he believed that it was unnecessary to use active placebos.
