I don't know if tramadol is "addictive". Its not technically a pure opiate. It does interact a little with opiate receptors (as does effexor and the TCA's to a lesser extent), but pain modulating effects are also due to interaction with serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake.

The norepinephrine transport has some effects on the duration of opiate analgesia. NRI's have pain killing effects in their own right. SSRI's, to a lesser extent, can also modulate pain perception.

I wouldn't say that tramadol is any more addictive than effexor. I know some people who use it long term for depression.
