In reply to seroquel to zyprexa, posted by markwell on July 1, 2009, at 14:36:35
I did a rather rapid switch from zyprexa to seroquel and then back to zyprexa. I didn't like seroquel. In the process, there was maybe about 3 days of cross-taper using both drugs simultaneously while making the switches. I didn't do the cold turkey thing. Whether it is a cold turkey switch or a cross taper switch, it is impossible to predict what bad or good will happen. You kind of have to listen to your body and follow the instructions it gives you.
I don't actually foresee a whole lot of problem in your switch except that I think you will experience much less sedation, and maybe even some stimulation, from the absence of the powerful antihistamine effect of seroquel. You might have poor sleep for a couple weeks. Again though, it is hard to predict. Basically you are getting on a much better med, in my opinion, but in the switch you are going from a super potent antihistamine to a mild-medium antihistamine. So I would kind of expect some awakening, stimulation, anxiety, nervousness, kind of stuff to happen, as a result of the lack of antihistamine effect. I could be wrong. Actually I found the calming and antianxiety of zyprexa to be far superior to seroquel. It just didn't have the elephant dart knockout punch at bedtime that seroquel had. On seroquel I was dazed and confused, definitely drugged, but rather nervous and frieked out at the same time. Strange way to feel. Zyprexa was an instant calmer, except without the drugginess part of it, within a few hours.
With these meds, anything can happen, including desirable and undesirable. For all I know, you might feel a lot better on zyprexa almost right away and it will go smooth as butter. That would be cool.
