extended release capsules are filled with bits of med variantly coated so that the med kicks in when the coating dissolves in stages (usually 2 or 3 stages--not a fine science)
tablets are another story
but if you are talking about capsules the only change would be if you did not administer within a capsule and the result of that would simply be a quicker initial reaction
