d3/d2 both get converted by kidneys (and possibly other tissue) to the 'active' form (Calcitriol, or 1,25(OH)2D3, or 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D - different names for same thing ) of vitamin D. issue is how well d2 converts. unless insurance is picking up the tab i'd think d3 is going to much cheaper, especially since it will be more effective per unit. the tests look for how much of the precursor d3 or d2 are availible though.
Milk isn't very good source of D, although its better than nothing. Getting 15 minutes of direct sun provides a lot of vitamin D though, although this time of year it won't work if you don't live in the tropics or southern hemispher. I have never been but i wonder if buying time at a tanning salon might not be cheaper than D gelcaps. Not sure if you can go for just 10 minutes or something or relative power compared to sun.
