MAOIs would cause me total sleep deprivation, I combined Halcion with Ativan. This was in the mid 1980s before Halcion went out of favor because of episodes of amesia. It seems to me that Ambien is no better, and could possibly be worse in this regard. Now, on an occasional basis, I use Ativan only.

Ativan was not too difficult for me to discontinue, even after daily use for 3 years.

I would not hesitate to try small doses of trazodone or even Seroquel first. I have seen someone safely combine Nardil with doxepin (Sinequan). Theoretically, trimipramine should be ok because it does not inhibit the reuptake of serotonin. However, I know of no cases of its use.
