Sam -
A couple years back I had some really serious tooth pain and was convinced I had a very serious cavity or abcess going on. I called the dentist on a Sunday for an emergency checkup, they took x-rays and then found nothing. Diagnosis: maxillary sinus infection, which can affect the roots of the molars. I had some doubts, but didn't have much choice, so I took the antibiotics. It was a stubborn thing, but eventually after two courses it went away. There was nothing wrong with my teeth.
This of course, may have nothing to do with your problem, but just a note that sinus infections, viruses, and bacterial infections in the face and head can produce tooth pain that feels almost exactly like a tooth problem.
