Well, my problem is being awake, ever. I have delayed-phase sleep problems, that melatonin helps with (and morning stims and exercise). Occasionally i use a few hundred mg theanine. It knocks me out but it would have tolerance for day to day use. Hm, I used to have some difficulty falling asleep (i do not have insomnia problems once I am sleeping). Meditation helped me learn to quiet my mind so that helped quite a bit. Sorry i don't have personal experience with mirtazapine, best of luck.
