You asked if there are other things that cause depression besides serotonin, NE, and DA. Yes. Thyroid not optimal, regardless of normal looking lab numbers. Hypo adrenal function (low cortisol). Hidden fungal, viral, or bacterial infection...lots of toxins that love to dock on the opioid receptors. Mercury or lead exposure. Amalgam fillings. Food intolerances...lots of toxins that love to dock on the opioid receptors. One person here was cured after being diagnosed with sleep apnea. So yeah, there is a lot more to the game than just the 3 neurotransmitters. In my mind, the big 3 are adrenals, thyroid, and metal toxicity. To me they are big because they cause just about everything else that also causes depression. When those 3 are working optimally, many potential causes of depression are prevented, eliminated, or reduced.

New drugs? Yeah, but probably the same ole theories. Hey Lexapro is the better half of Celexa, so maybe that new Effexor will prove to be the same. If all the common antidepressants of about 40 other countries were suddenly FDA approved, there would be several new drugs. Milnacipran, Stablon, Adrafinil, just to name a few. People get those mailorder from overseas.
