In reply to Depression - hormonal, situational?, posted by carlton on March 15, 2008, at 12:30:46

If I had to guess, I'd say it's synergistic -- a genetic predisposition to depression leaves you vulnerable to the situational and hormonal stressors you're currently experiencing. I don't think it's possible to tease apart what proportion of your current depression is related to which cause.

By the way, you've found your way to the Medications board here at PsychoBabble. It's a great place to discuss medications which treat disorders such as depression, but for more in depth discussions of the nature of depression, how environmental factors influence depression, etc, you might get better response at the Psychology board, even though it's not directly related to psychological treatments.

Good luck, and I hope that helps.
