Lamictal + Stevens-Johnson syndrome

Posted by Iansf on February 11, 2008, at 13:16:23

Does anyone know if Stevens-Johnson syndrome is something that builds gradually over several days or does it appear quickly? I started lamictal a couple weeks ago at 12.5mg/day, very gradually increasing dose. Last night I began to get very itchy, my joints started to ache, I got a minor headache and minor upset stomach - all potential symptoms of Stevens-Johnson. But I did not develop a rash or fever. I still itch, but the other symptoms have abated. Is it possible for the above to be early symptoms prior to appearance of a rash, or would they not occur on their own without the rash and also not go into temporary abeyance?

I've been prescribed lamictal as a possible augmentation for Prozac, and while I haven't seen any anti-depressant activity at this point (I'm still at 37.5mg/day), I have received an unanticipated and unpredicted benefit - partial reversal of SSRI-induced impotence.

So I'm trying to figure out whether I need to discontinue the lamictal or not. My doctor is not available this week to answer the question. If anyone has any knowledge about this, I would greatly appreciate the information. Thanks.

John
