No one really knows how the various antidepressants work, at least as far as how they manage to improve depression, but a lot of what I've read in the past few years says that they lead to down-regulation of some receptor types, which alters the ratios between neurotransmitters. The SSRIs also seem to encourage the creation of new neurons in some parts of the brain. All that takes a while.
So, it's not so much that the drugs would have to be changed, as our brains would have to change more quickly.
But you're right, having to wait so long to find out if something's going to work really [emulates a Hoover]. No question about it.
Funny -- the other day, my therapist was asking me about how long this med trial would last, when we'd know whether this would work for me? Answer? Oh, about three months...
