I know many people that self-medicate their depression with alcohol ("dual diagnosis") and although alcohol is classified as a depressant, it can be used to combat depression especially at moderate doses. Not that I'm recommending it, but for many it can keep their depression under control, although it can cause other problems especially if it is used to excess. For those that are on AD's the general consensus is that alcohol taken with these meds is a definate no-no, but many still risk side effects from taking alcohol along with their meds. I suppose under controlled situations and at low levels it can be safe enough(?) when combined with meds, it is never recommended or officially allowed.
