5f, the combination of haldol and sinemet were the cause of my father's NMS. He was given haldol, which prevents dopamine release and sinemet, which promotes dopamine release (since that chemical is soo low in Parkinsonism) and the removal of the much needed dopamine precipitated the syndrome. It was known he was on Sinemet, so it was a medical error to give him Haldol and this was done at Yale, a top 10 hospital in the country. If it was missed there, it would be missed most places unless someone had personal experience with it.

So much is NOT known about how the AP work and in combination with the various other drugs so many of us take, it can be a recipe for disaster. Even my own doctor prescribes AP without thinking about the side effects of NMS.

Removal of the drug, typically an antipsycotic, is the first order of business, followed by the administration of bromcristine and another drug (listed in the article under my post above describing the syndrome and the treatment).

Using an AP on it's own can cause NMS and I think the article said only 0.5-1% develop and 90% develop it within the first two weeks of use. My fear is that no one knows much about it, look at Jereon, and so many others where it is missed routinely.

I took Abilify, Risperdal, Seroquel and zyprexa myself for TRD and try to never do this unless I'm in a real crisis, so I avoid them if at all possible due to the risk, even minor, of NMS.
They have never done much for me in terms of depression resolution. I just stopped abilify on my own due to ineffectiveness, although I'm sure my pdoc would have been happy to see me continue to increase the Abilify rather than the wellbutrin or nardil, I'm not sure why with the seriousness of the side effects.

Are the drug companies offering the docs incentives to prescribe the AP's since abify costs $600 for a month's supply and did nadda for me?

Remember, a fever is the classic sign of the syndrome, so an unexplained fever with rigidity is what will usually occur first.
