I really can understand the fear of meds... About 4 years ago I discontinued taking SSRIs, because of how much weight I had gained. The months that followed were a slow and horrific decline in my ability to cope with life, with anxiety so extreme that jumping off a bridge seemed like a viable option. I still celebrate the day that I "caved in" and decided (despite knowing how much weight I would gain back) that it was time to go back on my med again. I know exactly what date it was, and every year to "celebrate
my sanity I go out to dinner with my brother (we're a tad odd, I know :-) The time has come now where I have to make choices about my treatment. Sadly, I've never been offered anything but SSRIs. I am one of the unlucky few that gain tremendous amounts of weight ( about 80 lbs at this point.) We've tried augmentation strategies to lose the weight, all which were ineffective. My health is starting to falter, which means it's time to try something new. However, I've sworn to myself that I will never fear taking meds again. They saved my life. I am a bit more educated now, and less fearful. I am willing to try other meds and approaches. Being AWARE, but NOT afraid are key to being your own mental health advocate.
