SLS,
Personally, topamax sends me hypomanic... and im sure ur familiar with the arguement that anything with antidepressant qualities has this capacity...

A canadian psychopharm i used to see has completed quite a bit of research on topamax and concluded that it can benefit bipolars..heres one his major papers:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=16086539&query_hl=1&itool=pubmed_docsum

I believe it has the capacity to be a great 'add-on' drug... I'm actually surprised u havent tried it yet..

Side-effects include cognitive problems, weight loss (which could be a good thing) and excessive thirst...
I say go for it!
