To say xanax has major liver risk is puzzling. Some meds do, but xanax isn't one of them.

Whether the switch is a good idea or not depends on how you are doing and what other meds you take. If depression and anxiety are both problems, adding effexor makes sense. If anxiety alone is a problem, then maybe increasing the dose to the xanax extended release version or switching to another benzo like klonopin or valium makes sense.

The switch would take time. You would have to be stable at your target dose of effexor and then begin a slow taper off xanax over several months. Xanax withdrawals are fierce and dangerous. You can't just stop it. And you don't want to lower it while getting on effexor either, because then you won't know if something goes wrong what is doing what.
