My experience with Effexor was that it was quite calming for the first week or so, but not emotionally numbing long term for me. It was pretty good for anxiety, as I recall, for about as long as it worked for me.
Most people start at 37.5 for a few days, usually around 3 to 7 days, but there is a newish thinking out there that starting patients at too low a dose changes the side effect profiles of drugs, and makes it harder for patients. I doubt your doctor was thinking of that, but would bet it was more about prescribing one dose level, rather than two, since you'd be paying another copay for each if he had. I think generally most of us got sample packs when we started, which makes it easier to get different strengths.
Good luck with it. It is a good drug, and I hope you don't read too much of the negative press it sometimes gets.
