I think the combination of prozac and zyprexa is one of the best options out there. Clinical trials show that it has "profound" antidepressant properties, theorized to be because of how the two meds combined stimulate a dramatic rise in norepinephrine and dopamine, as well as a modest rise in serotonin. They also have counteracting side effects which can be a benefit in lessening the burden of side effects.
I do not like the symbyax version though, because it does not give the flexibility to customize dosing. For example, prozac is generally stimulating for most people and is best taken in the morning. Zyprexa is generally sedating and best in the evening. Symbyax gives you both at the same time.
Maybe you would find you like 10mg prozac and 5mg zyprexa. Or 20mg prozac and 2.5mg zyprexa. Or whatever. There are dozens of different variations you might like. But with symbyax you don't get good choices.
I think there are a lot of benefits to taking the prozac and zyprexa as separate meds instead of combined in symbyax.
