Trazodone vs Desyrel?

Posted by AX on November 16, 2005, at 12:09:27

A short history: A few years ago I was taking Desyrel. Worked wonderfully - depression lifted, motivation returned - absolutely no downside. After about a year, however, it pooped out. So I tried the generic, trazodone, but that didn't work either. Previously, I had been prescribed SSRIs but found I couldn't take them - lots of undesirable side effects. After trazodone, I was prescribed Wellbutrin which sort of worked but not nearly as successfully as Desyrel. Also tried Effexor with horrible results. Medical history probibits tricyclics or MAO inhibiters.

A few months ago, I began experiencing panic attacks and asked my internist for trazodone (can't afford Desyrel). Suprisingly, it's been horrible! I began with 50 mg, and had trouble sleeping and a slight headache. After three nights, I increased the dose to 100 mg and was restless, had a horrible headache and congestion, and felt frantic and weepy. Last night, I dropped it back to 50 mg - side effects were less severe. Previously, I had taken 150 mg Desyrel.

What's going on?? Is it the generic that makes the difference (the manufacturer is Pliva)? I'm not sure what to do. As I said, Desyrel was GREAT. Within just a couple of weeks I felt like a different person. Should I simply give it more time?
