Hi Chairman,
>I now take it all the phenelzine at night, which has greatly reduced the insomnia (Nardil has an acute sedative effect, at least in me), sexual dysfunction, and drowsiness.........
.....could be due to brief duration of GABA-T inhibition? Just a guess.
>My only concern is whether or not the GABA-T and glutamic acid decarboxylase inhibition of the drug is irreversible. If it is not, then this once per day regime might not be as effective for anxiety as multiple doses. Anyone know about this?
I don't. I've never managed to find out.
>Also, does anyone know what pharmacological effects phenelzine has in addition to the enzyme inhibition? It definitely produces acute effects when I take it that are not related to enzyme inhibition in all probability.
'Many of the effects of the MAOIs may be unrelated to MAO inhibition, though these have been less well studied. The MAOIs also inhibit other enzymes, including dopamine b-hydroxylase, 5-HT decarboxylase, choline dehydrogenase, succinic dehydrogenase and diamine oxidase. MAOIs may also directly inhibit the transport of amines; tranylcypromine appears to block both 5-HT and catecholamine uptake. The extent to which these actions contribute to the antidepressant effect of MAOIs is unclear.'
