In reply to lamictal and topomax for bipolar disorder?, posted by sdb on May 20, 2005, at 4:49:46
I wouldn't say it's "standard". Topomax has been nicknamed "topo-stupid" because of the cognitive impairment it causes (or can cause). Lamictal is used a lot and a couple of years ago the FDA approved it as a first line treatment for bipolar. It is good for people who lean towards depression rather than mania. Some people use it for unipolar depression. I would combine it with Trileptal because Trileptal doesn't have many side effects. Well first, I would try the Lamictal alone and see how it goes.
I think a lot of people use Topomax because it helps them lose weight and if they have been using Depakote or Zyprexa as a stabiliser they usually need to shed about 25 + pounds. But I would jump to take it. It made me psychotic twice and I ended up in the hospital.
Here is a good site that talks about different stabiliser according to symptoms http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm#symptoms
