i liked todd's response, and it's much more technical than anything i can say.
i just wanted to let you know that i've been on two or more drugs of a lot of classes, and it makes me pretty uncomfortable, too. right now, i'm on both zoloft and prozac, xanax and klonopin, lithium and lamictal, haldol, seroquel, phenergan, and reglan. these are just the drugs within a class that effect the same neurotransmitters. i don't know about two SSRIs, but i think the suggestion of trying one SSRI plus a drug of another class is a good one. remeron would probably help with your anxiety and maybe so would a tricyclic. i haven't tried these meds, so i can't comment from personal experience. in general, i would think that prescribing two drugs in the same subclass is not very good medicine, though there may be some exceptions. with my two benzos, my previous doctor said that two benzos should raise eyebrows; three is an absolute no-no. for awhile, i was on klonopin, xanax, and ativan. unless there's a good reason to prescribe two indefinitely and it's not a transition type of thing, i would think that you or the dr should either pick one or else pick a drug that can cover all the bases that you are aiming for with the two. hope you figure this out!
