In reply to Why do they have DextroStat?, posted by mmcconathy on January 13, 2005, at 18:39:12
Dextrostat is technically a name brand & is made by the same people (Shire Pharmaceuticals) that make Adderall. But it is not much more expensive than the generic which is called dextroamphetamine (& does not work nearly as well for reasons unknown to me).
I believe that Dextrostat is superior to Dexedrine because only Dextrostat is available in a 10 mg tablet while (immediate release) Dexedrine is only available in a 5 mg tablet. Considering that an average dose for ADHDers is either 10 mg twice per day to 20 mg twice per day it would take an excessive amount of 5 mg dexedrine pills to equal those doses (& most doctors prefer to limit the number of schedule II meds they prescribe for a month of medication because excessive amounts can draw scrutiny of their prescribing patterns by the FDA).
I think d-amphetamine/Dextrostat is far superior to Adderall because Adderall has l-amphetamine in it which releases norepinephrine, causes more side effects, & causes more anxiety. It does not last as long however. But a solution to that is that if you take 20 mg doses, take the first 10 mg pill (on an empty stomach) & then one hour later take the 2nd 10 mg pill. Then it will last just as long as Adderall. It also seems superior to d-methamphetamine which has a tendency to release more serotonin & is toxic to dopaminergic neurons & does not seem to help adhd since it tends to cause vision problems & hallucinations (from pupils rapidly changing size), although I have never tried Desoxyn, i´ve only tried street varieties.
