Can't substitute Xanax with Klonopin at tapering?

Posted by Kristel on October 26, 2004, at 13:37:44

Hello,

Is it true that it's impossible to switch from Xanax (Alprazolam) to Klonopin (Clonazepam) when the day comes and I decide to start getting off it?

I am thinking about that because benzodiazepine withdrawal can be done much easier by switching to a benzo with a long half-life.

I have a good link to reasonable withdrawal schedules for benzodiazepines. There it appears that Xanax can be substituted by diazepam (Valium), and finalizing the taper off by using only diazepam.

So, do you have experience of switching from Xanax to Klonopin smoothly with no problems?!

What about equivalence between the two? How much Xanax is equal in effectiveness to say 1mg Klonopin?

Thanks!
Happy to have found this great place :)
