Take a *normal* sized breath. Look at the second hand on a watch or clock and hold your breath for 10-15 seconds. It will feel like you can't hold it, but you really can. Exhale and do it again. And again. And again. After a few minutes the physical symptoms should subside. Repeat the breathing exercise as needed. This is better than a paper bag and can be done anywhere unobtrusively.
Knowing how to do this simple exercise stopped my hyperventilation problems essentially overnight.
