My pdoc told me that it's okay to split the SR pills, as a waxy medium is what is used to provided the sustained release effect, but that the XL pills utilize a different mechanism involving a mesh. In that situation, the extended release mechanism is destroyed if you cut the pill in two, so it is not recommended.
