In reply to Possible celexa/wellbutrin augmentation, posted by jedimindjob on April 4, 2004, at 9:05:58
> Hello,

> I have GAD and depression, and I've been taking celexa for about a year now. I've benefitted greatly from it in terms of a complete reduction of irratability, anger, and an increase in self-confidence. Unfortunetely, I still feel very depressed, overwhelming meaninglessness, emptiness, anxious fatigue, and severe anxiety. I've tried paxil, prozac, zoloft, wellbutrin, and effexor separately years ago, but never felt any difference. For each, I tried them at one month intervals and was smoking a lot of pot at the time. So in all fairness, I'm not really sure If I gave them a decent trial. About 4 years have past since then, and I am now drug, alchohol, and cigarette free. In my third year of being drug free, I started celexa at 20mg, then 2 months ago increased to 40mg. Again, its done many good things for me, but the depression/anxiety still has not lifted. I keep hearing that effexor and wellbutrin are the best combo's for treatment resistent depression/anxiety. Any thoughts on that? I want to try an augmentation with wellbutrin and celexa first because of my success with celexa but still, I am not sure if there may be a better alternative. Since I am getting moderate succes with celexa, would augmentation with buspar be an alternative choice, or a recipe for disaster? Meaning if my seratonin is being increased with celexa, would a decrease in seratonin via buspar be actually detrimental? Should I increase dosage of celexa to 60mg or 80mg, instead of any sort of augemntation first? Also, if paxil is an SSRI like celexa, then why would paxil be approved for GAD and not other SSRI's like prozac, celexa, etc... Would it be a good idea to take paxil and celexa together? (Gasp!) Sorry for all the questions, but I'm so confused about the whole thing. I wish something would finally work! Thanks in advance.

>Hiya,
If Celexa is doing some good without excess side effects then go for another increase in dose, when you get up to the maimum possible dose, (which will be limited by what your doctor says or what side effects you can't withstand) then add something to it. If your sleep is poor, add Remeron. If you need some energy, add Wellbutrin. Other good things to add are the secondary TCA's desipramine & nortriptyline.

>To get a drug approved for a certain disease it has to be tested & go through a bunch of red tape which cost a stack of money. The drug company bean counters would determine if it is worthwhile or not to do it. It would be fairly safe to say that all the SSRI's would treat the same problems,(MDD, GAD, SAD, OCD, SP, etc.) it's more of a matter of getting on the one that suits you best.
