Lithium in cyclical unipolar depression

I have unipolar depression that cycles between mild/moderate and severe and my pdoc has suggested I try Lithium. I haven't found much about its effectiveness in this type of depression, has anyone had any experience of it or know of any useful links? I'm on 225mg Efexor at the moment.
