Paxil and Topamax

Posted by Jinxed on October 29, 2003, at 8:54:04

Let me give a little background on myself before I get to my questions.

I am 27 years old. I had a nervous breakdown when I was 11 1/2. At that time I was put on some antidepressant. I stopped taking it 3 months after I was put in it cause hey what then 12 years old, wants to admit they have mental issues? Plus I didn't want to become dependant.

So I survived very well without medication. Never had another break, and in all actuality I am doing fine, except as I got older, and 2 kids later, I noticed severe mood swings.

I asked my doctor about it and he prescribed Paxil. I didn't tell anyone I was taking it because I wanted to know if it really was helping me, if there really was a difference. My husband noticed a difference in the first week. Then I told him I had gotten "help".

A year later I'm fat, I am miserable about being fat. I wake up every night at 4am, and sit there staring at the tv for about a hour til I can go back to sleep. I had to have a sleep test done, and they said I was not having sleep apnia. When I do sleep I have very vivid dreams, and if I miss a dose of paxil, I have some very weird dreams.

I have tried going to the gym, cutting out soda, no extra salt, joining weight watchers. Nothing has helped. I saw a different doctor yesterday and he made a comment about my weight gain. That I had almost gained 10 pds in a month. He suggested Topamax.

I am very wary of taking any extra drugs, I don't like taking the paxil but it helps me keep from feeling like I am on a roller coaster. I have never been diagnosed with any certain disorder, so all I can give you is mood swings.

My question about Topamax is this, since these posts I am replying to were made a few years ago what are you comments about this drug now?

I have read on the internet that quote :

"Are you wondering if topamax as weight loss drug has been approved to be a equally effective remedy for weight loss? It ends up that phase 3 weight loss trials had to be discontinued, because the drug produced significant, unfavorable side effects. No, Topamax is not approved for weight loss."

So why would he prescribe it?

Also I have ready about it causing some problems with eyesight.

Can anyone here give me any reviews of this medicine? The Dr wants me to start at 25mg, and work my way up to 100mg.

Any help will be appreciated you can also mail me at:
