Adjustment disorder or bipolar disorder?

Hi-
From 14-17, I was seeing a psychchologist and my diagnosis was adjustment disorder. Then I had a psychotic episode and all of a sudden I was bipolar. It was a classic episode. Since that time, I have been on lithium and never come close to having a manic episode.
My therapist doesn't think I am bipolar and maybe that I just had a psychotic break. Also, I have heard of some people having one manic episode and then another years apart while not being on meds in between.
Any thoughts on this? Is adjustment disorder an adolescent diagnosis?
