I have been on/off Effexor XR for the past 5 years. At first it worked really well to help controle my short temper. I was taking 75mg a day. But after about a year it seemed to not work for me any more and my sex drive deminished. I stopped taking it for about 2 years and tried to control my temper with out the help of any anti-depressents untill I could control it any more. Everything went back into a fog and I felt I didn't have any direction in life. I recently went back on it and at a 150mg dose. It seems to be working again and that things are much clearer again. I recently started back at college at the ripe old age of 30. My life now has meaning and I am focused on a three year goal to obtain my BS degree in Computer Information Systems.
Now the reason I tell you this is to let you know I am not shooting from the hip abou this drug. I am currently doing a research paper for my Psycology class on the effects of Seritonin Reuptake Inhibitors and what a better SRI to research than a drug I am currently on.
I have found out that Seritonin "plays a role in sleep, depression, suicide, aggresion, and weight regulation." This is one reason Doctors may prescribe Effexor as a weight control drug. Your co-worker, in their DR's view, may have a Saritonin uptake problem. Which means that in your nerve cells that are sensitive to Saritonin, the cell does not produce enough Saritonin and the terminal button on the nerve cell reuptakes what little Saritonin is produced and not giving it enough time to do it's job.
Sorry I am getting technical but again I am doing research on this and came across this site today and thought I could help out with a little insite that I have found. I for one haven't enjoyed the benifits of weight controle with the drug yet but in time I may enjoy it's many side benifits.
