tianeptine versus the SSRI's

Posted by jmb on February 25, 2002, at 14:09:54

I'm currently on a moderate dose of celexa, and after a trial and error process with most of the SSRI's it seems to be the most tolerant. However, I'm hoping to explore other meds that might be able to address my anxiety (generalized anxiety disorder), and not just my depressive symptoms. I've found that although the SSRI's are great for elevating mood, the mental anxiety and sometimes physical anxiousness (e.g., increased heart rate and other physiological effects) are making me consider other options -- plus the sexual side effects are pretty much a downer too.

My doc hasn't had too much luck with combining sedatives like Xanax since they tend to make me sleepy and cognitively "slow," even at low doses

So hear's the question. Has anybody with depressive and anxiety symptoms tried tianeptine and had an effective response? And if so, how did it compare to SSRI's or other treatments you've tried? I guess I'm particularly interested in the fact it lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), whereas SSRIs can raise them. Other supplements that are supposed to lower cortisol as well are DHEA and St. John Wort. Any experience here too?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
jmb
