In reply to SSRI+Topamax to stop weight gain?, posted by Kathleen6674 on November 11, 2001, at 3:24:04
Kathleen - I think that 50% is a rather high number for weight loss responders with Topamax™ (topiramate). I believe that the actual figure is closer to 20%. Topamax is mainly being tried in people who are gaining weight with the new atypical antipsychotics like Clozaril™ (clozapine) and Zyprexa™ (olanzapine).
I believe that Topamax is to powerful a mood stabilizer, with too much chance of cognitive side effects, to be used as a drug just to lose weight, but that is just my opinion. Also, the has recently been reported an increased risk of developing glaucoma with the drug. It would be wise to have a serious talk with your doctor before Topamax is considered to be added to your regimen.
I hope that this is of some help. - Cam
