All kinds of strange things sometimes happen when two drugs are combined. In your case, I would be more tempted to point the finger at the Xanax as the guilty culprit than Zyprexa. Even if Xanax did not give you any problems before Zyprexa was added, it could now be the problem. Since you are reducing the dosage of Xanax, I personally think that is the best thing to do at this time.
I take Zyprexa to treat depression and to improve sleep. I have some leftover Xanax from a trial about a year ago. Every now and then I will take .5mg of it if I want to sleep extra good. When I have done that, I also noticed my speech got a bit slurred, similar to drinking too much alcohol. For me, Xanax alone didn't do it, Zyprexa alone didn't do it, but Xanax added to Zyprexa did. I think Xanax is the guilty one. Just my opinion though.
John> My neuro just started me on Zyprexa, 2.5mgs/day. Tried every other med on the market for possible PD, BPII, and maybe simple partial seizures. I can't tolerate any of them except the benzo's. Just finished 2nd full neurological evaluation in last 10 years. Everything was normal. Sleep, anxiety and depression are biggest issues. So my cocktail is now Zyprexa, 2.5mgs/day, Xanax, 1-2mgs/QID, Inderal, 60mgs/BID. I have been on the Zyprexa for 1 week. Pdoc was pissed at the addition of Zyprexa, but if it works I don't care. I just woke up from my first night of 8hrs+ of unbroken sleep in years. My question is this, I get sleepy every 4hrs or so since starting the Zyprexa and start to slur my words and sometimes can't even get them out. I don't have the speech problem if I'm not sleepy. I don't want to go to sleep every time I get tired because I want to get on a normal sleep cycle. Awake during day, sleep at night. If I nap during the day, I can't sleep at night. I realize that I just started the Zyprexa and need more time to adjust to it. It does help with the anxiety and I'm hoping that it will stabalize my sleep. Does anyone else have problems with this type of speech problem using Zyprexa? If so, is it associated with feeling sleepy? If anyone has had this speech problem, especially when you first started the Zyprexa, did it go away after your body adjusted to it? How long should I give the Zyprexa to kick in and lose the speech problems? 2 weeks? A month? I've already started tapering off the high doses of Xanax(slowly). I'm aware that the combination of Xanax and Zyprexa could be causing the speech problem. Never had the speech problem until I started the Zyprexa. I know that everyone is different and drugs affect each of us differently. I'm just looking for some feedback about the speech problem, if anyone else has experienced this, and if it went away over time. Any thoughts from the experts with experience using Zyprexa? I do realize that the Zyprexa has already helped the anxiety, and that after 1 week I finally got 8hrs+ sleep last night, so it may be kicking in now. Thoughts, suggestions, anyone. I'm not new to drug side affects and am fairly knowledgable with respect to most of the drugs, AD's, AED's, mood stabalizers and benzo's. But this venture into atypical anti-psychotics is new to me. Thanks
