In reply to ne1 really helped by diet? ie, more fruit, veges,, posted by nutsy on September 3, 2001, at 9:49:52
I think a proper diet can make a subtle difference in how one feels. At least, it does with me anyway. What I do is focus primarily on carbohydrate foods, such as oatmeal, whole grain breads, vegies, fruits, and such for morning and afternoon. I try to avoid proteins. The reason is because I have experimented, and this pattern helps me stay energetic during the day. Theoretically the absence of protein allows the tryptophan in carbohydrate foods to be converted to serotonin without any interference or competition from proteins. I eat my protein at dinner time.
I have noticed if I stay with carbohydrate foods during the day, my energy stays up and I do not slump. However, if I for example have a hamburger for lunch, forget it. I'll be dragging all afternoon.
Different people respond differently to various kinds of diets. I think for everyone it is worth experimenting to see which, if either, makes a noticeable difference in energy or mood. One choice is carbohydrates all day, protein at dinner. The other choice is proteins during the day, then carbohydrates at dinner. If there is no difference, then eat whatever whenever. But I think most people will notice that the order in which they eat certain types of foods can make a subtle difference.
Of course, when someone is really in trouble with a mental illness, I don't think any diet is going to fix that. It makes a subtle difference for me, but not enough to fix whatever is awry in my brain chemisty. Only Prozexanil is strong enough to do that. :-)
John> water, etc.? Notice I did not include exercise as that has proven effects. Curious if a balanced diet full of good nutrition can actually help provide builder material and effect depression/anxiety.
