Janelle - I think I mixed up aspartame, with it's 2 amino acids, the the sweetener the is the stereoisomer of sucrose (saccharine?) and this is not metabolized.

High dose may cause problems in people with PKU (phenyketonuria), but one could equally blame the high levels of caffeine that your boss was ingesting. Also, she may have had other reasons to manifest her symptoms (severe stress, slight PKU problem, stimulant abuse, etc.).

Sorry for misleading you, sometimes the old brain mixes things up. Thanks for catching my mistake. I and my family do not ingest aspartame, but it has shown to have problems in a subset of people. - Cam
