The relationship between antisocial behaviour and substance abuse in childhood and adolescence: implications for aetiology, prevention and treatment.
Sanford, Mark."Rates of substance use and SUD (Substance Use Disorder) are high in adolescent samples. Substance use disorders frequently begin during the adolescent years, and are associated with marked morbidity and increased mortality. Recent studies have extended the described morbidity to include anxiety disorders, increased rates of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases, and one study raised the possibility that alcohol-abusing adolescent persons may be particularly at risk for hippocampal damage. The association of SUD with childhood ASB is well established, but there is growing evidence that other psychopathologies, especially depression and anxiety disorders, are important antecedents of SUD. Referred children and adolescent persons with these disorders, and children who begin to use substances at a young age are at high risk for SUD. Therefore, the development and evaluation of clinical and targeted interventions for these populations should be a research priority. The search for effective prevention interventions continues, and recent research suggests promising new areas for exploration. These include public education about the benefits of establishing smoke-free environments at home and work, and parenting and other interventions for children of parents with a history of SUD..."
