In reply to ADHD or Depression, posted by cramx2 on April 17, 2001, at 23:58:40
I was diagnosed last year with ADD and thought we were finally on to something, after years of unsuccessful treatment for depression. After about 6 months, my moods started spinning completely out of control. I was up one minute, hysterical, crying and non-functional the next. I was hospitalized for the first time (for my illness) in October.
Turns out, I had been misdiagnosed once again. I decided to see one of the top mood disorder specialist in the country to see what was really going on. He determined that I was bipolar. The ADD drug, used without a mood stabilizer, had caused me to rapid cycle.
I too identified so much with ADD symptoms that I had been convinced that was my illness. I took an online test and scored 19 out of a possible 20 points. It sounded just like me.
Bipolar mimics ADD in so many ways, it is hard for even your average psychiatrist to tell the difference, especially when depression is also present.
My advice would be, see a specailist. Even if your insurance doesn't completely cover it, it will be money well spent.
Hope you find your answers.
