If adding Prozac to Effexor withdrawal symptoms is not an option, ginger root might be the answer to your problem.
Ginger root has been widely used as an alternative agent in the disequilibrium associated with motion. Its use in seasickness and vertigo has been established. For SRI (serotonin reuptake inhibitors) withdrawal symptoms of disequilibrium and nausea, a dose of one or two 550-mg capsule three times a day usually ameliorate these symptoms within 24 to 48 hours without ginger root side effects. Treatment with ginger root should be continued for approximately 2 weeks after SRI has been discontinued.
Caution with the use of ginger root:
1) It can cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Large overdoses can cause central nervous system depression and cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heart beat).
2) Theoretically, it can cause increase risk of bleeding in some people using other herbs with coumarin constituents or anti-platelet effect. These herbs include (not complete list) garlic, ginseng, ginkgo, guarana ("G" herbs), chamomile, feverfew, licorice, passionflower.
3) Theoretically, ginger root might interfere with antacids, sucralfate (Carafate), H2 antagonists (Pepcid, Axid, etc.) and drugs for GERD (Prilosec, Prevacid).
4) Theoretically, ginger root might increase the effect or risk of bleeding if combined with Coumadin (blood thinner).
5) Theoretically, ginger root might enhance the effect of barbiturates.
6) Theoretically, due to hypertensive (raising blood pressure) or hypotensive (lowering blood pressure) effects, ginger root might interfere with blood pressure drug therapy.
7) Theoretically, ginger root might interfere with heart drug therapy.
8) Theoretically, ginger root might interfere with diabetes therapy due to hypoglycemic (lowering of blood sugar) effects.
9) Avoid ginger root if you have the following conditions: a) Gallstones (gallbladder stone), ginger root will worsen gallstone symptoms; b) Bleeding conditions, excessive dose of ginger root can interfere with increase risk of bleeding; c) Diabetes, excessive doses of ginger root can cause hypoglycemia, necessitating change in dose of diabetes medication; d) Heart conditions, excessive doses of ginger root might have cardiotonic action that can interfere with the therapy for heart conditions; e) High blood pressure, excessive doses of ginger might increase or reduce blood pressure, interfering with blood pressure control.
10) Pregnancy: Likely safe when used orally in amounts found in foods. Possibly unsafe when used orally in amounts greater than those found in foods; avoid using. One case of spontaneous abortion was reported in the 12th week of pregnancy in a woman who used ginger for morning sickness.
11) Lactation (breast feeding): Insufficient reliable information available; avoid using amounts greater than those found in foods.

> Does anyone know if Benadryl or any other over the counter medications work to elleviate the horrible withdrawal symptoms of Effexor XR? I have been on Effexor for almost a year and it has helped me overcome my depression (atleast I think I have over come it). I am currently trying to wein off of it slowly. I was up to 300 mg, cut back to 225, then 150, and as of 5 days ago, 75 mg. I felt a great deal of muscle tension and anxiety as I went down each level, but disappeared after 2 weeks at that newer lower level. But I am feeling HORRIBLE since I have cut down to 75/day. I started feeling other symptoms that I thought were morning sickness, and took 3 pregnancy tests before realizing that maybe it was a reaction to the decrease in Effexor. This was an extreme blow to me to realize that I have probably have several more weeks of feeling like this and also finding out that I am not pregnant, which is the reason I want to stop taking the medication and also since I felt 100% back to myself again.

> Does anyone have any suggestions other than Prozac???? I thought I might try that route just to elleviate these awful feelings of dizziness and nausea and brain farts/spaciness. But I really don't want to take anymore antidepressants, I just want to be drug free so I can get pregnant without harming my future baby. Please help...I am feeling so discouraged. Any thing, even if it was something you felt was stupid but helped get you through the period of withdrawals. Thanks.
