When I first started taking Prozac, my pdoc had me titrate up really slowly. This was before the liquid version was available. I would "disolve" it in water, stir well, and divid the liquid up. The prozac powder does not dissolve, it just sort of suspends.
I can't imagine this working with Effexor XR, though. Coincidentally, out of curiosity, just the other day, I opened up a capsule and found that inside the capsule are little tiny pellets of verying sizes, and it appears to me that it would be impossible to make sure that equal amounts of each size pellet were in each of the divided portions of liquid.
The cost savings in larger pills is something many managed care companies now insist on for patients. For many patients, this is fine. But for many, it is very difficult to take the larger pills, even cut in half, because they might be thicker or wider. For me, it isn't a splitting of doses issue, but it is hard for me to take the huge 150 mg effexor xr pills, so I have my pdoc write the scrip for the 75 mg. He says the insurance complains about this sometimes.
