Scanning the latest issue of Psych. Today (which is working on becoming more professional and reputable and less lightweight)I noted in the Letters to Editors section discussion of an article in the Sept/Oct. issue which apparently discusses the issue of how ADs are too readily issued and accepted and one should consider them as a stopgap measure and no more. That's much my point of view and I'll be seeking out that article tomorrow.
If you haven't already checked it out, check out the NYTimes Mag. article on placebos, from this past weekend, which is referenced above. Very good article which discusses how the placebo affect is being tested out on ashtma, knee surgery and many other areas. Last year while participating in a research study on perfectionism (a precursor for depression, cuz there's no such thing or possibility as perfection) I noted on a couple of occasions when I was feeling physically dreadful and we had some meaningful, thoughful exchanges that there was a dramatic physiological and psychological improvement. And I've noted the converse when overly stressed, particularly this past year..
The challenge, as I see it, is to learn how to deal with stress better and the search for a means, continues...perhaps the PT article will have some ideas for me.
The Maritimers are more clannish because of their Scottish roots & hospitality, generations of inter-relationships & the fact that there are only approx. 750,000 folks in N.S. and less in other provinces and many are related by blood or mythology. Plus most enjoy a good social time, too often with too much booze.
Good luck with your ventures. Cuba would be cool.Some gorgeous cities there there are still in the fifties, design and transportation-wise. See the Buena Vista Social Club before you go and you'll see what I mean.
