In reply to interstitial cystitis and bacteria, posted by marlene on May 16, 1999, at 14:26:11
Dear marlene,
I have also been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. My uroligist firmly argues that bacteria is not the cause. It is merely some unexplained chronic irritaion and inflamation of the bladder. Still, I have also wondered if it might be some strain of bacteria that the docs simply don't know how to culture. Antibiotics don't seem to make much of a difference for me. Antideppressents are sometime prescribed for chronic pain conditions including I.C.. I began taking AD's for depression but was pleased to find that both Serzone and Paxil totally relieved the I.C. symptoms which can be quite uncomfortable. It certainly beats the bladder installation route!

> For years I have suffered from what is now thought to be interstitial cystitis. For years I took Bactrim which kept it under control quite nicely. When my liver test showed an elevation of enzymes, my doctor took me off Bactrim and all my symtoms came back. My doctor insists that bacteria is not my problem because none is grown in a culture. Recently I have read articles about extremely small bacteria called nano-bacterium that may be the cause of many diseases, even heart disease. Because of their extremely small size, only recently have scientists been able to see them with new tests. Why else would Bacytrim control my symtoms for so many years? Any comments?
