It helps me to sleep and control my anxeity (panic attacks) the next day. I don't think I could manage without it. Amitriptyline is safe to take. It is a good thing to have around.

I do recall having an anxiety attack (panic) shortly
alfter starting amitriptyline. Then again I was
having lots of them at the time. When the med finally
started working, however, it definitely reduced my
need for xanax (although lithium was still nec.)I recall reading somewhere that in the first week
of TCA therapy, people can have an anxiety reaction.
My advice would be to stick with the amitriptyline
for at least a month, using benzos when necessary,
but give it a good try at a minimum of 75mg before
calling it a complete failure. I also never had
the classic "poop-out" of the SSRI's while on
ami.I currently can't take it because I have heart
problems. To be honest, I am still searching for a
replacement ad. My subjective feeling of "self" on
amitriptyline seemed more like my "self" compared
to other meds. Since I also have bad allergies, the
cholinergic side effects were in some ways good!Good luck,
Sean.
