Why does someone use drugs? Because they don't like their current "state of mind." If they do like their state of mind, they want to go further. This is the scoop. Addiction is a side effect of the underlying intention to feel or think a certain way. In fact, benzos may be just what a person needs. Addiction prone people don't necessarily take benzos,for example, Because they are "addicts". Rather, they are "addicts" because they are prone to addiction. This is a big indicator the "addict" has a chemical,etc imbalance and THIS causes the addiction. Then it's a matter of weighing pros and cons. Leave this descision to a qualified physician - the doc may have to monitor more closely, but the welfare of the patient should determine medical administration. AA and NA, although very helpful and successfull for some, has nonetheless labeled the "addict" and the "addict" is "always" an addict. Not True! This is not a matter of science at this point, but more of an imposition by "principles" that have no intrinsic validity to them. Bottom line? The pot smoker, or the alcoholic, is self-medicating. This means that the person is most likely MORE in need of some or another "addictive" substances that are prescribed. Not because he's an addict! He is/was addicted because of THE NEED. Better go to a doc than a bar. I am not eliminating the subject of "physical", in the strict sense, addiction. I'm just making a point.
