I just recognized who it was and was giving FB a link. When I post a link it doesn't mean I agree with the content. I try to explicitly say so if I do.

In this case, it's not my kind of comedy and I don't agree that many of his observations are "so true." I do think there can be good, healthy humor around mental illness, like anything difficult and negative we humans have to cope with, but teasing out and then sharing that humor is....dicey. I do not particularly care for the quote ron posted in his OP. It doesn't make me laugh at all.

That's why I said, "different strokes." Sorry if you got the idea I like this particular routine.

Well I couldn't get the link to work, and looked it up on YouTube and couldn't find it, but did find something silly by Louis CK with only two bleeps. So pretty clean. Made me laugh. You might think I am a fan, but I hardly know this guy. Didn't sigi post him first? Anyways,

You know, I watched the video, and I still don't get the joke. Either I am not clever enough to understand it or I do understand it and am clever enough not to laugh.

My hunch is it's the latter, Scott, since I see you as quite clever. I'll take an educated guess that opining, even through humor, that "depression" is merely a display of a deep[er] commitment (does he mean desire? wish?) to feeling really, really, really disappointed isn't all that funny to you. But of course I could be wrong and often am.

I pretty much wish I didn't get it.

Huh, weird, link works okay for me.

Here's another one where I like MM much better...I knew I saw him on Craig Ferguson a while ago....turns out it was a year ago....he's really good IMO....I seem to appreciate the non-MH stuff more...

I don't think the joke is so much food for thought as it is fodder for discrimination.

Maybe I'm just too depressed to laugh at depression jokes right now. The joke was cute in its own way, but it is not an accurate reflection of the illnesses that many of us here suffer from. If one's level of commitment were all that drove MDD or BD, I wouldn't be here. I would be functioning happily in society.

It doesn't help society that a comedian should teach an audience to view mental illness as being the product of a conscious act. It goes to misinform and reinforce notions that produce stigma. It allows people without mental illness to view depression as a character flaw rather than a disorder of the brain.

I wonder what thoughts ron1953 found food for.

Ron1953, I would be curious to know what lessons there are to be learned through your cryptic reference to "food for thought". Perhaps you can teach us something. Would you be courageous enough to volunteer any of your thoughts that the joke provided food for?

I think some are going quite the opposite direction AWAY from humor, and taking the quote much too seriously. I didn't view the line as so much humor, but simply as an interesting observation about the sometimes very thin line between "normal" and not-so-normal. The cognitive dissonance stimulates my brain.

Lighten up folks - you may find it refreshing.

Thanks for the advice.

You didn't answer the question. You don't have to, of course, but you are the one who suggested that a joke was food for thought. Thoughts are sometimes a serious matter.

I'm reminded of the Android character, Data, who wants to be more human, but cannot understand the very human trait of humor.

Scott makes some good points. Humor is so important for relief, coping, bonding, etc. Yet, it can be (maybe inadvertently) a tool of wrong-headed teaching about MI to those not savvy about these conditions. Then it's really unhelpful. Unfortunately, some people learn everything they know about a thing like MI from pop culture alone.

What reminds you of Data? Scott? Me? People who don't necessarily see *that* particular line as all that funny? I've been told I am very humorous, zany even and I believe I get the concept of humor almost always. I am often told, "Be serious," and rarely to "lighten up." I like MM in general. I think some of his stuff, including a lighthearted way of viewing *some* aspects of bipolar disorder, could be universally understood and funny. But, I also get it if any Babbler reading that, or hearing his bipolar-related jokes, wouldn't be amused or get the humor at all. It might depend where they are in life at that moment in time.

Humor can be - often is - pretty subjective.

Data was consistent in his application of logic. It makes no sense to offer a joke as food for thought and then retreat from discussion when thought emerges as a result. I find humor in this irony.

If you didn't find it humorous or interesting, OK. Leave it be, as the subtleties of such critical thinking obviously escape you.

That comes across as rather harsh.

I took a quick peek and I think I'll join the fray with a quick post (I'm swamped with work at the moment and have buckle down in a few moments, so probably won't be writing more posts).

I have to agree with those that did not like the comment. FWIW, I'm a good critical thinker (trained in the sciences), and have used humor to help survive my depression. I didn't find Marc Maron's statement or his video either humorous or interesting. To me, they are disappointing and damaging.

Different strokes I guess....I just hate to see the potential for stigma to be perpetuated through comedy acts that trivialize serious conditions.

Have a nice weekend.

Very little escapes me.

I am still awaiting your sage answer to a simple question that follows logically from your comment that the joke you quoted was "food for thought".

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20111012/msgs/1000861.html

What is it about depression that you think a joke should teach us such that you would offer it to a community of mentally ill as "food for thought"? Did you have anything particular in mind?

It seems to me that you are evading taking responsibility for your words through obfuscation, which is, of course, ironic, in as much as you like to accuse me publicly of this behavior.

I'm always thrilled by Doug Stanhope's misanthropy.

His stuff is uneven but there are very good bits.

It is not a question of whether or not SLS understands a joke. It is a question of your intimating that there is some mysterious wisdom to be found in it. I am reasonably sure that you understand this. However, you seem to be too frightened to tell us exactly what you had in mind by your suggesting that this joke was "food for thought".

Don't even bother. I have lost interest.

I don't know if this is to your ummm taste, but it made me laugh.

I had a girl say this to me. She goes "you know, if god intended women to suck dick, he'd have made c*m taste like chocolate" I said "Yeah, but he had to make it taste like bleach so you remember to do the laundry"
