I'll take an educated guess that opining, even through humor, that "depression" is merely a display of a deep[er] commitment (does he mean desire? wish?) to feeling really, really, really disappointed isn't all that funny to you. But of course I could be wrong and often am.

I don't think the joke is so much food for thought as it is fodder for discrimination.

Maybe I'm just too depressed to laugh at depression jokes right now. The joke was cute in its own way, but it is not an accurate reflection of the illnesses that many of us here suffer from. If one's level of commitment were all that drove MDD or BD, I wouldn't be here. I would be functioning happily in society.

It doesn't help society that a comedian should teach an audience to view mental illness as being the product of a conscious act. It goes to misinform and reinforce notions that produce stigma. It allows people without mental illness to view depression as a character flaw rather than a disorder of the brain.

I wonder what thoughts ron1953 found food for.

Ron1953, I would be curious to know what lessons there are to be learned through your cryptic reference to "food for thought". Perhaps you can teach us something. Would you be courageous enough to volunteer any of your thoughts that the joke provided food for?
