I am a pathetic loser

Posted by Deneb on July 2, 2006, at 0:39:09

I am a pathetic loser. I've made nothing of myself since high school. I'm failing everything. I'm failing life. I have no degree, no job, no skills, no experience, no real friends and no life.

People who didn't do as well as I did in high school are making something of themselves. They're finished with their degree(s) and working in real jobs. I used to think I was smarter than they were. I always had the better grades. All that doesn't matter now.

I'm stupid now. I have no skills, and no life. I'm a loser.

I should probably give up on life. :-(

I'm such a loser.

I did so well in high school...now I'm failing everything.

I don't think I ever fully recovered from my first breakdown my last year of high school. Something happened to me, I lost my way.

Can I give up on life?

I tend to think a lot of the same types of things about myself....

but sometimes I think that journey has been really valuable..... and then, maybe, I stop looking so many miles ahead for a little while, and I just pay attention to where I am, wherever I am, and things can feel a little lighter

what does it mean to "fail" anyway? that's a definition to consider??

I'm sorry you're having a hard time. I wonder if you're in a school break right now...maybe contributing to the feeling of stuckness?? I don't know.

take it easy on yourself OK, you can be OK - one step at a time-everyone has their own path to travel
you know Robert Frost right?
the poem?

You're intelligent (from what I can tell) and a genuinely nice person, that's more than 98% of people on this Earth can say. That alone automatically exempts you from the label of "loser" for life in my opinion. Those traits give you a lot to work with.

You are obviously intelligent, and I have never seen you being mean. So in my book, you are NOT a loser!
Keep on being the best you that you can, and working on yourself.... lots of people care.

Many of us struggle with those feeling here. It is often part of our illnesses rather than reality. I do think it is ESSENTIAL that you see a therapist. (Your pdoc is lovely, but you need psychotherapy more frequently). I'm willing to bet that almost all babblers would agree that therapy could help you a lot. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee think abt it.

Best,
EE

I don't think you're a loser. In me, you have given me things to think about and self-evaluate. We've had a good, intelligent, rational discussion recently --- that was good for me. Maybe I'm selfish and self serving but someone who illicits that in me isn't a loser at all in my eyes.

I think it's illusional the "great life" and accomplishments of others when we use them as a yardstick to measure and compare ourselves to. AND, for me, it doesn't serve much purpose.... Easy to do, but purposeless.

It's called "depression."

Here's a reality check, in case yours bounces:

Since high school, you've been in school, right? That exempts you from the pathetic loser label.

You know what, though? It kinda feels to me as though posts like this one are largely about getting reassurance from others. That's a general statement, not just about you Deneb. There's nothing wrong with wanting reassurance, but it's something that therapy is good for -- exploring why you want that reassurance, and why you can't give it to yourself. And seeing a pdoc for half an hour once or twice a month is not therapy. Therapy is a 45 to 50 minute session AT LEAST once a week.

Lastly, as someone who really can qualify as "not having made anything of my life since high school" -- that is, since my last full day of high school in 1979 -- I have to ask you where you're getting that phrase about "make something of my life?" What does that mean? That's not a Deneb phrase. Whose phrase is it? Where is that coming from?

Whoops! That's something else to explore in therapy.

I'm nearly 50.Never worked.Had only one real friend as an adult ie my late wife.Ditto with the degree as i got ill around 'A level' time so never took them or went to uni.

I doubt you are more of a pathetic loser than me.

On the other hand perhaps the mere fact we haven't
gone under despite all the crap and
are still hanging in there makes us a little less like losers after all.

Deneb you're not a loser and at 24 that is not old. I didn't go back to school until my early 30's for nursing and now I can't work and am old. So no future to look forward to. Think about all the years you have to work hard in theraphy and all the new meds that will come out in your lifetime. Love Phillipa ps and you have Buttertart to keep you company and love

Thanks sleepygirl, for reminding me that there are many paths to take in life.

Thanks llrrrpp, I hope you got a good night's rest.

Thanks Michael, you're a nice person too. :-)

Thanks rainbutterfly. I don't know about the intelligent part, but I'll agree that I'm usually not mean.

Thanks EE for the suggestion. I think you're right, every 2 weeks is not enough therapy.

Thanks Glydin. I enjoyed our recent exchanges.

Thanks Racer. I think I do want reassurance. I'm not very good at giving it to myself. I'm going to look into therapy again.

Thanks capricorn. I don't think you're a loser. It's tough, living with illness.

Thanks Phillipa. It's nice to know I can still make something of my life at my age.
