3 days this week on PSB? Sleep clinic nightmare.

Posted by beardedlady on February 7, 2003, at 12:15:05

Here's what.

I've been sleeping fine, but it took three months to see our state's top sleep doc (indeed, maybe country's top), so I went, and he set me up for sleep clinic--two weeks later. That was last night.

Night before last, too nervous to sleep. Finally fell out after three hours of fretting and having sex. Thought I took a sleeping pill when I got up at 2:00, but turns out it was just a dream.

So we went to a big dinner to help me feel warm and cozy for sleeping in the hospital. It was supposed to snow 5 inches overnight, so hubby was dropping me off at the clinic (at Johns Hopkins Hosptal). He and daughter checked me in and left.

I was there an hour, had washed and brushed and donned the p.j.s when a tech I hadn't seen before came in and told me the clinic was closing at 4:00 but that they'd have enough data by then.

What do you mean? I have to LEAVE AT 4:00 A.M. IN THE SNOW? Yup. That's our snow policy. BUT I WAS DROPPED OFF HERE! Can you get a ride home? AT FOUR A.M.? Or now.

So I gathered up my paperwork, put my clothes over my p.j.s and had hubby wake up daughter to come all the way back (half an hour in the snow) at 10:00.

While I was waiting, the techie who never should've let me get settled in the first place came to tell me the director told them not to close.

That clinic is going to have a lot more than two cents from me.

Unbelieveable.

Who ever heard of a sleep clinic throwing out patients at 4:00 a.m.? Who ever heard of a hospital closing because of snow?

Sheesh. (Insert your very own favorite four-letter word there.)

So I slept like a rock last night (nine hours) and woke up to 8 inches of snow, much happier to be sledding this morning with them than driving home in the muck.

But still, very unprofessional of them, don't you think?

So did you get your sleep analysis done?

On an only vaguely related note, after years of procrastinating I found a new pdoc to try. Woke up this morning to go to my first appointment, only to discover the appointment was 2 days ago and I missed it. My bad. Hardly slept a wink last night because I've run out of neurontin from the old doc. Was counting on the appt to get new meds right now. Crimeny.

No--I was thrown out at 10 PM! G'luck w/ new pdoc. (nm) » Tabitha

I hope you give them a piece of your mind. That ought to keep them busy for a while!

I won't blow your cover; note that I did not start this with your name (BeardedLady).

BTW, I hope you get another chance to do the sleep clinic.

It took me awhile, but I understand now!

I had a feeling my little faces wouldn't work right.

I meant
beardy sad but secretly happy.

But maybe I should keep my identity secret, as I am posting far too much for the day, as my little toes are thawing from the 2 hours of butt bobbing down the giant hill with twenty teens and tots and happy parents.

Is it beer time yet?

Shar, I don't know if I want to do the sleep study. That room looked about as inviting as--as--as Michael Jackson's bed!

Oh, wow, the lil faces. Went right over my head, that is WAY more advanced thinking than I'm capable of today!

Are you having hot choc? I used to love hot chocolate after coming in from the cold. With little marshmallows on top. Yummmmm. Sledding sounds like great fun.

Yes, we've already had hot chocolate. (Well, I've had some cold chocolate--Hershey's kisses--and drunk my daughter's hot chocolate vicariously through her!)

Here's the secret to great hot chocolate with water: six ounces! I never realized before, but you have to put no more than six ounces of water with those packets (yes, Swiss Miss with mini marshmallows, but the very best water-mix kind is Land O' Lakes). I used to think those were nasty, watery drinks until I followed the directions on the label a few weeks ago.

I wonder how many others put too much water in theirs, or if I'm the only one.

I think I should get some diet hot chocolate, because I am really craving it now. I have already been eating Jif with a spoon today.

Jif?? In the UK JIf is either a lemon juice concentrate, or bathroom cleaner!!!

I hope you're not eating either of those by the spoon full!!!

A hearty har-har to you, Nikki.

Jif is THE best peanut butter. As a child, I ate it with a spoon out of the jar. It was the major cause of my excess weight. I have avoided peanut butter for about twenty years, having it only a few times a year. But I sometimes crave it and eat it straight.

The lemon juice concentrate would be okay, though. Lemons are my favorite fruit!

Hi Beardy,

> Jif is THE best peanut butter.

Indeed IT IS!

> As a child, I ate it with a spoon out of the jar.

I still do. Does that mean I am still a child?

> It was the major cause of my excess weight.

Perhaps mine too.

> But I sometimes crave it and eat it straight.

Beardy, it has about the best nutrition you can get. It is *full* of protein and vitamins. The latest "food pyramid" has nuts listed as a significant source of protein, and I definitely get my share of PB, usually as PB&J sandwiches.

Just make sure you get some exercise to take care of that "excess" weight, and stick with the PB.

Ted

(PS: I think PB is primarily an American thing. I don't think most other cultures eat PB much.)

Hi, Ted:

No. It just means you didn't learn your lesson about thighs.

> Beardy, it has about the best nutrition you can get. It is *full* of protein and vitamins. The latest "food pyramid" has nuts listed as a significant source of protein, and I definitely get my share of PB, usually as PB&J sandwiches.

Yes, but in moderation. It's excessively high in sugar and fat. I like to slather on the PB thickly, sans jam (which, IMO, is far preferable to gooey, blobby, icky jelly).

> Just make sure you get some exercise to take care of that "excess" weight,

I'm the queen of exercise, but it doesn't counter the peanut butter; it counters the other stuff.

>and stick with the PB.

Would that be peanut butter or psycho babble? : )>

I think the Brits eat that hazelnut spread--what's it called? Nutella? Yum.

Women == thighs
Men == bellies

(my thighs are fine; it's the battle of the bulge I'm fighting)

As you wish. I'm inclined to say BOTH!!

> I think the Brits eat that hazelnut spread--what's it called? Nutella? Yum.

Seems to me it is all Europe. I found it in homes in Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, and Slovenia. Yeah, it *is* good. It is also full of chocolate. :-)

now I'm hungry.

I don't think it's a 90's thing either - and maybe not even an 80's thing. My husband and I eat nearly all of the peanut better in our house. My teenage daughter has only very recently decided it's okay - my teenage son won't get near it. Who are these children and where did they come from??

Nutella is actually German in origin.. my parents used it alot when they lived there in the 60's and early 70's.. so they hunted it out when I was a baby!!

Peanut butter is probably more popular here in the UK though.. theres more jars of that in the supermarket than Choccie Hazlenut spread!!!

Could be regional, too. PB is a mainstay here. But it's also mostly a pre-teen and adult treat. I think, Mair, you're right about teens eschewing it. But the little tots dig it. My daughter hears the lid unscrew these days and comes running in to get a spoon.

That's sad. We have two other "major" brands here: Peter Pan and Skippy. I think Peter Pan's the one that's extra salty, and Skippy's the one that's not really creamy. (Jif has so much oil and sugar in it that it's really, really creamy.)

I use the natural peanut butters for cooking, but they're not sweet enough for me.

Jif makes a pretty good reduced fat version. Too bad I have the cravings now that I ran out of it.

The most popular common brand over here is Sunpat.. you get smooth, crunchy, spiralled with jam, chocolate spread and, I think I've seen it swirled with marshmallow too!!

I just buy crunchy supermarket brand!! I don't like it much, but hubby loves it :o)

Gonna look out for Jif now!!

My hubby prefers the chunks of nuts. I prefer the smooth. But even the crunchy is smooth and creamy under the nuts.

Ugh--that swirled stuff. We've had that around since I was a kid. It makes me ill. (I also hate when someone puts the jam knife in the peanut butter or vice versa, leaving those peanut-butter covered lumps of glurp. Ick.

Well, I'm done with my posting for the week. I am peanut buttered and Michael Jacksoned out.

Thanks for chatting on the thread, all youse guys.

Jif is my fave, too...creamy. Plus, I give my dog her pills in Jif. She is delighted with it, too.

To keep order in the pack, I also give the other dogs a taste of Jif, and have had no complaints.

About the hot chocolate. How can you drink that stuff made from WATER??????? Is that real hot chocolate? I have to have it made with milk (2% is fine) or it just ain't the same. OTOH, I use the Swiss Miss type in my coffee (sans marshmallows) sometimes, and that's pretty good.

BTW, I think Jif is very healthy for you.

I didn't have a chance to read through the thread, but....

Any sleep study I have participated in wakes the clients up at 5am. My guess is it is something to do with hours the clinician/tech works. They have to disconnect everyone and cleanup (at least that's what happeens in our sleep clinic)

> Any sleep study I have participated in wakes the clients up at 5am.

Not this one. You can have a wake-up call up until 8:00. That's what I chose. The techs told me they need six hours worth of data, and, since sleep clinic participants usually have some sort of sleep disorder, I can't imagine them getting enough data if they threw everyone out at 5:00! But each place and situation is different.

>My guess is it is something to do with hours the clinician/tech works. They have to disconnect everyone and cleanup (at least that's what happeens in our sleep clinic)

Not this one. New techs start at midnight and are there until 8. Anyone who's on duty can unhook you at any time.

They closed the clinic early due to snow, but they reopened it because the clinic director hadn't authorized the closing. It was very unprofessional.

I'm glad you were lucky enough to have participated in a sleep study. I stress myself out too much and would probably sleep fewer than six hours if I had 12 hours in which to do it.
