Matchmaking service for individuals in therapy?

Posted by Phyl on January 8, 2003, at 21:02:34

It's true.
(San Antonio Express News) A psychoanalyst (Dr. Frederick B. Levenson)in New York is offering a matchmaking service, but only for those who have been in psychotherapy for at least two months in the past two years can apply.
"Theoretically, the process cuts through misleading false impressions and matches people according to the lay of their psychodynamic land. Couch-clients deemed compatible are then given each other's names/numbers."
Levenson believes people in counseling make great catches. Those in therapy represent "an elite group...They are among the brightest, most verbal people in America" says his Web site. "There is more depth in somebody who is willing to look into themselves, and whether we offend people or not, we consider people in therapy smarter than the general public," Levenson told a reporter. 5,000 people within two weeks logged onto www.theradate.com after its launch last March.

Levcnson charges $2,000 for up to eight introductions a year.

Many therapists have issues with TheraDate concept saying it muddies the therapist-client relationship - which needs to stay straightforward and pure - and in essence turns psychotherapists into glorified meddling old aunties.

Gosh! Wanna check it out?

Okay, I agree with him we're obviously smarter than the typical person out there... I mean, look how dorky our posts are on this site.

But do you really want someone as messed up as you are? =)

I do get bored though with "normal" people, as in people who do mainstream stuff... but as Freud said, there's no normal. I consider anyone "off" if they're a mainstream deviant, but usually I consider this from a broader societal perspective, not a mental health one.

But where's the service for people who think they know more about themselves than their therapist, and are overly-reliant on meds that don't work? 'Cause I'd sign up for that one in a second. Heh- after a year of realizing psychopharmacology is a rough science, I clinched my teeth and am now going for CBT as well.

But CBT is really just an elevated form of nagging for me =)

Holy cow! I must check this out. But what's this dude up to? $2000 b/c his fees just aren't covering things for him. Really now. If my husband were depressed, we'd never leave the house. Or talk to each other! Or like each other! Oh let's face it...or end up together.

cuts through misleading false impressions
>i told him within a few dates. no misleading. No nuthin'. Could he handle it? Yup. Would I have ended up with him if he couldn't? probably not.

>"an elite group...
Well we all know that to be true!

>They are among the brightest,
But of course.

Incidentally, i met my hub on www.udate.com. For non-um, "elite"..

>meddling old aunties.
Can you imagine? Therapist would be nodding his head when you tell him that you're disatisfied with your life and he gives you a minus in his notes. you say that you seem to be drawn to dangerous men and you'd get a check mark. Calculate the percentage of checks after a few sessions...and giddy-up..."Meet Frank, he has OCD, GAD, and BP. But he's looking for a woman on the same 'emotional plane'"!

i gotta go look at this loon's site now...

Sounds fishy to me...boundarywise, that is...

A long while ago on PB, some of us toyed with "personal ads" in our posts--some were very amusing.

You know: Dark humored professional-on-leave in search of soulmate. Sensitive, self deprecating, loves lolling on the sofa and long walks to the fridge....etc. etc.

There's a DJ Tripolar... weird that you used this term. Newspaper reviewed him, said some story about hypothetical idea over the DJ being bipolar plus something else...

but a bipolar and a bipolar = quad-polar, because bi=2, and 2*bi = 4

Ha! That's weird...

Yeah, I considered that and decided that 1+1 persons in a relationship would= a strange new kind of polar that was a mix of the two!

Twisted reasoning = sleep deprivation from where I sit...
